Six reasons why festivals are so much fun

Good friends, good music and a great time: For a lot of people, summer just isn’t summer without at least one festival.

Some people find the idea of camping with strangers, using portable toilets and walking around in mud unthinkable and appalling – but summer festivals still manage to attract thousands of people every year. Several festivals in Switzerland have actually achieved cult status. Examples here include Open Air St. Gallen, Frauenfeld, Gampel, the Montreux Jazz Festival and Zürich Openair, which was established more recently than the others. Switzerland has festivals for just about every music genre – and you usually don’t even have to travel far to enjoy them. Various festivals both large and small take place in many regions around Switzerland between June and September. Whether it’s for one day or for several days with an overnight stay – there are many reasons why you should attend a festival in Switzerland this summer.

#1 Having fun with good friends

We create our own memories, but the best memories are those shared with good friends. Attending a festival with your best friends means having great experiences that you’ll be talking about for years to come. What’s more, when you spend time with others who feel as good as you do, you also end up making new friends. Conversations come easy when you’re setting up a tent or standing in line to order a drink. The reason is that everyone in such situations has certain things in common: they love music, camping and big parties. In other words, when you attend a festival, you’ll meet many like-minded individuals, and in some cases even “fellow sufferers” who make the best of difficult situations.

#2 Idyllic natural surroundings

While it’s true that transporting all the things you need for a multi-day festival can be a taxing experience, you’ll be rewarded in most cases by a beautiful natural setting in which you’re surrounded by mountains, forests and lakes and streams. Such a setting is what makes the live music experience so special, and in the remote locations where most festivals are held you don’t need to worry about disturbing local residents. The best part is that when you’ve had enough of all the hustle and bustle, you can always find a place to relax and enjoy the scenery. It goes without saying that any good festival experience also involves respecting natural surroundings and the environment in general.

#3 Great music

One of the best reasons to attend a festival is obviously the great music you’ll enjoy there. Music moves people and knows no language barriers. It makes us dream and elicits emotion. Live music in particular has an electrifying effect. When you feel the bass booming through your body, sway to the music and let yourself go with the crowd, you experience a type of happiness that is shared by everyone around you. Festivals offer the opportunity to see your favourite artists and other well known bands perform live, and discover promising newcomers as well.

#4 Food from around the world

People who attend camping festivals usually bring along plenty of snacks, such as crisps, sweets and nuts. The more ambitious among them use Bunsen burners to heat up canned food and prepare other simple dishes outside their tents. Still, even though cooking in a rustic atmosphere can be a lot of fun, sometimes you just want to have a meal that tastes good and is prepared by someone else. Food stands attract festival goers with their enticing aromas, and even the long lines that result aren’t enough to discourage people from trying out culinary delights from around the world. Whether it’s spicy curry dishes from an Indian stand, flavourful Mexican fajitas, simple pasta dishes or a Turkish kebab – the food offered at festivals isn’t always the healthiest, but most festival goers take the “Yolo” (You only live once) attitude, which means there’s no reason to feel guilty when you devour your favourite dish!

#5 Living in the moment

People look forward to festivals with great anticipation. They start feeling the excitement when they purchase tickets far in advance of the event, and their anticipation also serves as a source of motivation when they study for exams or forego certain pleasures in order to save money for the festival. Then the time finally arrives: your favourite festival has begun! In order to ensure that your anticipation isn’t a more pleasant experience than the festival itself, it’s best to take things as they come and enjoy the moment. Which brings us to the last reason why festivals are so much fun…

#6 Young and carefree

The summer is young and there are many fantastic moments still to come. You can take some simple precautions to ensure such moments are enjoyable. You don’t necessarily have to leave your smartphone or other valuables at home just because you’re worried you might lose or damage them. It’s a good idea to always keep your phone, wallet and other valuables on your person and never leave them behind in your tent, for example. One way to do this is to use a belt bag, which is now back in style by the way.

Valuable tips on how to protect your smartphone include jotting down the IMEI number and using a screenshot of your contacts (especially those who are at the festival with you) as a background image for the duration of the festival. That way, if you lose your phone and an honest person finds it, he or she (or the lost property office) can easily get in touch with one of your contacts, and if the phone is stolen, you’ll at least have the IMEI number when you report the theft to the police.

Insurance for mobile phones and other valuables

Even with the best preparation, you still might lose something when you move through a dense crowd – and theft is also always a possibility. It therefore makes sense to get insurance for your mobile phone and other valuables at The policies available offer many advantages. For example, they can be used to cover individual items, which means you only pay to insure those things that are truly important to you.

People who can enjoy the moment without worrying about the future tend to be very satisfied with their lives – which is exactly the way things should be.
